It’s now been well over a year since we last returned from Haiti. It’s never been far from our minds though and we’re always open to opportunities to assist. It’s amazing just how those needs sometimes surface! Imagine our surprise when we got an unexpected e-mail from our friends at the Global Therapy Group. Donna Hutchinson and Jo Ann Roberts were active in the same Petion-Ville hospital we were during last year’s work. You may recall our team erecting an outdoor clinic for their physical therapy services. These amazing girls have managed to coordinate a nearly continual presence of US physical therapists and have formalized their organization into a US 501c3 non-profit tax structure.

Unfortunately, Donna’s team of physical therapists has been forced to relocate their clinic recently. They have received a generous offer of a suitable structure, but it’s in need of serious repairs. And that’s where Rainmaker comes in! We’ll once again travel down to Haiti to provide project oversight and will likely self-perform a fair share of the work. As always, we’ll endeavor to bolster local tradesmen and material suppliers, as possible. The current scope of work includes structural repairs to roof and ceiling, demolition of interior walls, enlarging doorways and adding ramps for handicap access, along with basic electrical and plumbing repairs.

Hard to believe that this was not even on the radar two weeks ago and now we’ll be wheels-down in Haiti two weeks from today! Time has not allowed formal fundraising in advance, but we would very much like to help Donna offset our logistics and construction costs. We’re kicking around the idea of another charity poker tournament in the DC area, upon our return. As always, any generous support is appreciated. We anticipate this trip and project will cost approximately $5,000, which will put a heavy dent in the Global Therapy Group’s 2012 operating budget. We’d like to recover that amount for them, ASAP. Donations can be processed through our website PayPal service or by check. We’ll arrange tax deduction letters for donors.

Thanks in advance for your support and stay tuned for updates during travel!

First of all, a hearty thank you to our donors, participants, and supporters for a successful poker tournament! Your combined generosity helped us raise $3,450 for our on-going endeavors in Haiti. And of course, congratulations to our evening’s big winner, who was awarded a 3-bottle vertical flight of Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet. Given the enthusiastic response, we hope to repeat this event in the near future, so stay tuned!

Additionally, we were named a top 25 contributor to ebay’s Giving Works program for July 2010! This recognition was in response to the $8,900 we raised for Massachusetts General Hospital’s MindLink Foundation by auctioning a classic 1986 Pontiac Trans-Am muscle car. Here is what Lorrie Norrington, President of ebay Marketplaces had to say…”Every month, eBay community members donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to great causes when they buy and sell on eBay. Last month you were one of the most generous. Thank you! With your help the eBay Community raised $3,149,015 for charity last month. We truly appreciate your philanthropic spirit and applaud how you embody what makes the eBay community so special.”

On the downside, the funding we had hoped was eminent for our proposed expansion and major repairs at the Haitian Community Hospital in Port Au Prince, Haiti remains in question. Our partner in this endeavor, the Real Medicine Foundation has aligned a consortium of three strong private hospitals in Haiti and is vigorously pursuing substantial funding to support on-going operations, as well as our major construction work. Unfortunately, like many things in Haiti, this opportunity appears to be bogging down in the hot political debates over control of reconstruction funds. We remain hopeful that a solution will materialize, but it does not appear to be the clean elegant model of a private donor that we had hoped. We’ll keep you posted!

Of course the Haitian Community Hospital has not been our only focus in Haiti and business and philanthropic opportunities continue to present themselves. We will certainly advise as we get traction with other projects. In the meantime, in order to keep the lights, put bread on the table, buy Momma a new pair of shoes, etc., we are engaged in multiple commercial and residential projects in the US, including Shell retail petroleum work for Circle K in KY, IN, and PA, residential projects in VA and WI, and supply chain consulting work in TN and NJ.

In an effort to help them grow the funding of this young foundation, we have auctioned off a collectible car! This pristine 1986 Pontiac TransAm has barely 27,000 miles showing and is in original condition. The proud new Southern California owners are sure to have a great summer of open-air beach cruising! 100% of the proceeds from this vehicle’s sale will go to support Dr. Schmahmann’s research at MGH. It’s never enough, but we do what we can. Please take a minute to visit MINDlink’s website and consider supporting this worthy cause.

Greater clarity was brought to the interaction and opportunities with many US government agencies, including…

World Trade Center

US Department of Commerce

US Commercial Service

Inter-American Development Bank

US Agency for International Development

Overseas Private Investment Corporation

US Trade and Development Agency

International Trade Administration

Minority Business Development Agency

In addition to the leadership from the above US government organizations, participants had the opportunity to hear personal thoughts on Hait reconstruction from a number of elected and appointed officials, including…

Chaka Fattah, US Congressman, 2nd District of Pennsylvania

Michael A. Nutter, Mayor, Philadelphia, PA

Edward G. Rendell, Governor, Pennsylvania

It’s great to know there is so much support available to Rainmaker in Haiti. Now it’s time to get back to work and convert the strategic notes to a tactical gameplan for fast execution!

We arrived home late last night after a 16 hour travel day with a great sense of accomplishment for the past weeks work. We’ve moved into our new storage area and have lights! The team was able to secure the Global Therapy awning and rebuild their table. It’s great to see the space being utilized so well and patients being transformed over the past month. Additionally, we were able to support the hospital by retrofitting a series of bunk-beds to accommodate a team of Doctors from Loyola University Medical School.

The electrical issues are immense. The generators were taken away for repairs and a loaner was brought in to provide temporary power. We’ve evaluated the electrical issues and have formulated a plan to provide dependable, suitable power to the hospital for years to come. Pending funding, this project can be completed by the end of 2010!

Note this beautiful view from the rooftop expansion project we’re planning! Our team has evaluated the needs of HCH and have proposed an expansion of 20,000 sq ft of additional patient bed space, administrative and medical service space. The expansion would complete the 2nd story addition to the hospital started 10 years ago. Cost for this project is estimated at nearly $2.8 million and could be completed by next summer. The expansion would increase the patient capacity from 75 to 210 and double the administrative capacity. With so many hospitals devastated by the earthquake, HCH has the best opportunity to increase patient care in the area quickly. We’re working with potential donors and organizations to bring this vision to reality.

As we continue to push the stones uphill, it will get easier. Results have a way of leveling things out and creating unstoppable momentum.

The team spent most of Saturday rebuilding our basecamp atop the Haitian Community Hospital. The heat, extreme rains and heavy winds certainly took a toll on the camp. Today we provided what repair we can to the Physical Therapy canopy we installed last month. This further reinforces the need for a permanent solution.

Yesterday we completed a thorough study and analysis of the existing hospital as well as the 20,000 sq ft expansion for which we are currently seeking funding. The expansion will increase the patient bed count from 75 to 210 and can be completed by mid-summer next year.

The abundance of garbage still remain and serve as a constant reminder of the living conditions here and the tremendous opportunity available to make a difference. Recycling continues to be a viable solution that will create a lasting impact for generations.

Sunrise on the Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City finds me 12 hours removed from the Rainmaker team in Port au Prince. As some are likely expecting to hear updates from their return to Haitian Community Hospital, I thought I would relay the following excerpts from a Brad Clinkingbeard 5/21 e-mail…

Team,

Doug and I are safely back at the Haitian Hilton. Hospital is without power again today. Both generators have gone down and need to be taken out of here for repairs. We’ll likely be without power for days and don’t have an Internet connection.

The tents are in need of repair. The heavy rains, blazing heat and heavy winds have taken their toll over the past month.

It’s been pouring for the past 2 hours and I’m hanging in the tent.

Our basecamp blue awning is mostly down. Beef jerky and cliff bar for dinner.

Big meeting Sat @ 10 with potential funding source. The lack of electricity and reliance on the generators which aren’t working should demonstrate the need.

Out for now. It’s cooled off with the rain and should sleep good tonight!

Sent from my iPhone…

Brad Clinkingbeard
